The city, kept at the front door
The new stair against the rough original wall, with the timber seat built in.
Behind the old brick,
winter sun on dark timber:
the city, far off.
A small inner-city terrace with a protected heritage façade and original brickwork. Working with the client’s architect, we rebuilt it from within.
The brief was light, privacy and quiet in a home that sits metres from the street. The new stair rises through a rendered volume with a timber seat built into it; the old wall stays rough beside it. Black joinery, a full timber shelving wall in the kitchen, and an attic bedroom tucked under the rake with a window into the trees.
